The Flexible Routine I Return to When I Need to Feel Like Myself Again
I’ve never been someone who sticks to the exact same evening routine every night.
Some evenings I wash my face, brush my teeth, and head straight to bed. Other nights I have the time—and the energy—for something a little slower.
That’s what this article is about.
This isn’t my nightly routine. It’s my reset routine. The collection of familiar rituals I come back to when I’ve had a stressful day, when life feels especially busy, or when I simply need a little extra care before tomorrow begins.
I don’t expect myself to do every step every time. In fact, I think that’s part of why it works. Some nights I only do one or two things. Other nights I work through the whole routine. It changes depending on what I need.
Over time, I’ve noticed I reach for the same products again and again. Not because they’re trendy or because I’m always searching for something better, but because they’ve quietly earned their place. Most have been part of my evenings for years. A few I’ve repurchased more times than I can count.
This isn’t the only way to end the day well.
It’s simply what an evening reset really looks like for me.

I Start With Warm Water

When I need a real reset, this is almost always where I begin.
Not because a bath solves everything, but because it’s one of the simplest ways I’ve found to create a little separation between the day I’ve had and the evening I’m about to enjoy. Once the water is running, there’s nowhere else I’m supposed to be for a little while. I don’t have to answer emails, clean the kitchen, or think about tomorrow’s to-do list. I just get to be still.
I almost always reach for Dr. Teal’s Foaming Bath with Pure Epsom Salt in Lavender & Eucalyptus. The scent has become part of the ritual as much as the bath itself. It’s familiar, calming, and doesn’t feel overly perfumed. After using it so many times, it’s become one of those little signals that tells my brain the busy part of the day is over.
That’s probably my favorite part of this whole routine. I don’t spend my evenings chasing the next miracle product. I simply come back to the products that have already earned my trust, which makes the entire routine feel calmer before I even finish it.

After my bath, I hop in the shower. This is where the reset starts to feel less like relaxing and more like letting the day wash away.
One product has been part of this step for years: the Premium Jasmine Dead Sea Salt Body Scrub. I use it after shaving and before washing with body wash, and at this point it’s become part of the routine without much thought. Amazon says I’ve bought this six different times. At this point, that’s probably the most honest review I could give. I’ve tried enough products over the years to know that if I keep replacing the same one, it’s because I genuinely miss it when it’s gone.
I love the way it leaves my skin feeling smooth and refreshed, but more than that, I love that it’s familiar. When I need a reset, I’m not looking for something new to try. I’m looking for things I already know I’ll enjoy. There’s something surprisingly comforting about not having to make another decision.
It’s a small step, but it’s one I look forward to every time I need an evening that feels a little gentler than the day that came before.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: I don’t try new products when I’m already feeling overwhelmed.
When I need an evening that helps me recharge, the last thing I want is to wonder if something is going to irritate my skin or leave me wishing I’d used something else. My reset routine isn’t the time for experimenting. It’s the time for familiar things that I already know work for me.
I start by washing my face with the Kate Somerville DeliKate Soothing Cleanser. It’s gentle, doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight, and has become the cleanser I reach for when I want my skin to feel calm instead of stripped.
From there, I layer on products that have quietly earned a permanent place in my routine. The pūrlisse Kale + Vitamin K Moisturizer gives my skin the hydration it needs without feeling heavy, while the NEOGEN 15% Niacinamide Serum has become a consistent part of my routine because I like how my skin looks and feels when I use it regularly.
If I’m dealing with tired eyes, I’ll add the Glow Recipe Guava Vitamin C Eye Gel, and a few nights each week I’ll finish with the Good Molecules Gentle Retinol Cream. None of these steps feel complicated anymore because they’re familiar. I know the order, I know how they feel, and I know my skin responds well to them.

The last part of my reset routine takes less than two minutes, but it’s often what makes the biggest difference the next morning.
Before I get into bed, I put my hair up in my YFONG Mulberry Silk Bonnet. It’s one of those purchases that felt a little unnecessary at first, but now I rarely think twice about it. I wake up with less frizz, fewer tangles, and one less thing to deal with while getting ready. It isn’t glamorous, but it quietly makes my mornings easier.
I also take a moment to apply Cuccio Naturale Lavender & Chamomile Cuticle Oil. It’s a tiny habit, but one I’ve genuinely come to enjoy. I’ve bought bottles for myself, my mom, and my sister because it’s one of those inexpensive products that feels like a small luxury every time you use it. The lavender and chamomile scent is subtle, it absorbs quickly, and it leaves my hands feeling cared for without adding another complicated step to my evening.
Neither of these products is essential. I could absolutely skip them if I needed to.
But when I have an extra minute, they’re an easy way to end the day with a little kindness toward my future self.
Why This Reset Works for Me
I keep coming back to this routine because it doesn’t expect the same thing from me every day.
Some evenings I have the time for a bath, a full skincare routine, and all the little finishing touches. Other evenings I wash my face, put on moisturizer, and call it a night. Neither one feels like a failure because there isn’t a checklist I’m trying to complete.
I’ve realized that what I need most at the end of the day isn’t a perfect routine. It’s a handful of familiar rituals that help me slow down without asking for much in return. The products I reach for have earned their place because they’re dependable, easy to use, and fit naturally into my life. I don’t have to convince myself to use them—they’re simply there when I need them.
I think that’s what makes a reset sustainable. It bends with you instead of expecting you to bend around it.
🌙 Closing Thoughts
If you’ve been trying to build the “perfect” evening routine, consider giving yourself a little more flexibility.
Instead of asking what you should be doing every night, ask what helps you feel a little more cared for when you need it most.
For me, it’s warm water, familiar skincare, and a few small rituals that make tomorrow feel a little easier. On another day, it might only be one of those things—and that’s enough.
The best evening resets aren’t the ones that look impressive on paper. They’re the ones you’ll actually return to, again and again, because they fit into your real life.
That’s the kind of comfort I keep coming back to.
